In February 2025, a large-scale wildfire broke out in Ōfunato City, Iwate Prefecture, burning approximately 2,900 hectares (around 9% of the city’s area). The disaster caused severe damage, including 210 destroyed buildings, 1 fatality, and the evacuation of 4,596 residents.

World in Peace has been supporting recovery efforts in collaboration with local organizations such as the community salon “Harmo” and the volunteer group “Ōfunato Yoriso Mirai Net.

On the material side, the organization provided women’s hygiene kits, hairbrushes, and other daily necessities. Financially, World in Peace contributed funds to sustain counseling services and home visits for affected residents. To date, around 50 consultation cases have been handled, and cooperation with local authorities has led to the establishment of a new municipal financial support system for victims.

In May 2025, a permanent consultation booth was set up inside the Ōfunato City Hall, which was later visited by officials from the Cabinet Office as part of their site inspection.

Moving forward, World in Peace will continue working closely with local partners to listen to the voices of the community and deliver tailored, people-centered support that responds to individual needs.
